Danielle from Penrith:

Hi HKA,

I’m doing a school assignment on calcium and I was just wondering if you could answer a few questions for me. What is calcium and is it true that it is good for your bones? Which foods have calcium in them?

Thank you!

Hi Danielle,

It is true – calcium is a mineral we get from food that is stored in our bones and teeth to keep them strong. The best sources of calcium in our diet are dairy foods such as milk, yoghurt and cheese. While you’re young your bones are still growing, so it’s important to include dairy every day. Smaller amounts of calcium can be found in other foods such as almonds, fish with small bones such as sardines or salmon, and firm tofu. You might have to eat quite a bit of these to get the same amount as a glass of milk though!

Thanks for your question.
