Ordering, prepping, cooking and serving are all part of a canteen manager’s day. There are so many steps and procedures needed to keep a canteen running efficiently. We’ve come up with four handy hints (that we use in our HKA-run canteen) to help keep things tidy, efficient and best of all…simple.

4 Handy Hints for Canteens

  1. Decant milo straight into the milk bottle through a funnel. This cuts down on prep time and means serving milo is quick and easy.
  2. Use foil containers (holds approx. 325ml) to hold hot food so they can be portioned out and kept warm before serving. Take the containers out 15 minutes before serving so they’re not too hot. $4.50 is a reasonable price for a serve this size.
  3. Blend vegetables into a pasta sauce (our HK tomato sauce is a good base) and the kids won’t even know they’re there.
  4. Prep your paper bags! Open them up, line them up and then fill ‘em up. This assembly line style of serving is efficient and frees up your time for more important things such as baking bulk serves of muffins or stock take.
