HKA’s super snack & sandwich competition

This year we have a new competition to take the place of our Canteen Recognition Awards. We’re looking for current members across NSW and the ACT to send us the recipe for their best selling menu items. There are great cash prizes to be won!

We have two competition categories:

Sensational Sandwiches
Sell out Snacks

Entries will be judged on how practical the idea is for canteens to recreate the item, its nutritional value and taste. We’d also like to hear how these items are presented and promoted at your school. All recipes entered in the competition should be classified as GREEN under your healthy canteen strategy (e.g. Fresh Tastes @ school if you’re in NSW or National Healthy School Canteens Guidelines if you’re in the ACT).

General criteria for entry for both categories:

  1. The recipe must be considered GREEN under the Fresh Tastes @ School Strategy if in NSW or the National Healthy School Canteen Strategy if in the ACT.
  2. Only NSW & ACT Healthy Kids Association current financial year members are eligible to enter the competition.
  3. All sections of the entry form(LINK TO BE ADDED) must be completed. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

 

Criteria for sandwich category:

Entries in the “sensational sandwiches” category must:

  1. Comprise of any bread item (e.g. bread, roll, wrap, pita bread, focaccia, baguette, etc ) plus filling.

 

Criteria for snack category:

Entries in the “sell out snacks” category must:

  1. Must be sold as an over-the-counter item available at any time of day.

 

PRIZES TO BE WON!

In each category, we have three fabulous cash prizes to be won for the canteen.

Winner: $500

Runner- up: $300

Third place: $250

 

Tips for success:

Include plenty of GREEN items in your recipes, such as:
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Reduced fat dairy
  • Legumes
  • Lean meat, fish, poultry and eggs
Keep it simple & cheap

We’re looking for recipes that can be easily recreated in school canteens so an extravagant complicated sandwich or snack isn’t necessarily going to be the winner.

Be creative

Use unusual ingredients that you would not usually find in a sandwich or snack and put some thought into how you present it.

Deadline: 5PM, Friday December 19th 2014.

Please note: winners MUST be available to attend the Healthy Kids Food Expo and Training Day in March 2015. Financial help will be available to enable you to do this.
