Buyers’ Guide

The Healthy Kids School Canteen Buyers’ Guide is a valuable tool to help school canteen managers build healthier canteen menus in line with their state/territory’s healthy school canteen strategy and nutrition requirements.

In 2018 we will publish a separate NSW Buyers’ Guide which will provide information on products meeting the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy Food and Drink Benchmark. The new strategy was released in 2017, and all NSW schools have been invited to start working towards the minimum Benchmark. The NSW Buyers’ Guide will list products as Everyday or Occasional using the Food and Drink Benchmark criteria based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines and Health Star Rating (HSR). In keeping with the Healthy Kids Association mission, a higher standard is used to register products in NSW. Registered products must have a HSR of 3.5 stars or more. The NSW Buyers’ Guide will be printed and sent to all NSW schools for the beginning of Term 1, 2018.

The Buyers’ Guide for ACT, NT, QLD, SA, TAS and VIC will continue to list products as GREEN or AMBER. Products are assessed against the Healthy Kids Nutrient Criteria and colour coded according to each state/territory healthy school canteen guidelines. These products will be listed in the online Buyers’ Guide and searchable database.

A PDF version of the NSW Buyers’ Guide will be available to view and download at the Healthy Kids website.

Please note: for any queries on the clarification of ratings of products available in Tasmania, please contact the Tasmanian School Canteen Association on 03 6223 8023 or email

Please note: the Buyers’ Guide is a tool for school canteens with products listed that are not always available in supermarkets. Many have been developed specifically for the healthy school canteen strategies and are available only through distributors in food service.

The Buyers’ Guide contains:

  • Listing of products that have been assessed by the Healthy Kids nutritionists and meet the appropriate criteria for each state/territory.
  • Contact information for each company to make ordering easy.
  • ‘Canteen Bites’ – a section featuring handy information and recipes for canteen menus.
  • Advertising opportunities available for registered food and drinks and non food products and services.

School canteens in NSW will receive one printed copy of the Buyers’ Guide for the start of Term 1. The downloadable PDF will also be available to schools across Australia for the start of Term 1. You can also search the Buyers’ Guide online here, or request a copy by emailing us.
